Connected Stockholm Royal Seaport

The Connected SRS project was implemented between 2018-2021 to explore the use of the Internet of Things (IoT) in sustainability initiatives in Stockholm Royal Seaport. A number of pilot tests were in the following areas Resource Flows in Properties, Green Areas and Parks, and Travel Habits and Mobility. Based on these pilot tests, project partners developed a largely new IoT platform based on the Fiware standard. Another key activity was collaboration and the establishment of routines for managing shared development needs linked to IoT in the City of Stockholm.

Digitalisation is an important tool in Stockholm Royal Seaport’s ambitious work on sustainability. The use of existing and new data sources through IoT has considerable potential to support follow-up work and the development of new services in the district. Large amounts of data have already been collected from the City of Stockholm activities, external actors, and by the people of Stockholm themselves. However, data is often stored in different systems or otherwise inaccessible to City of Stockholm operations.

In 2010, work began on developing digital infrastructure with related services. This work was suspended as digitalisation requires a city-wide goal and strategy that was lacking at the time. In 2017, the City Council adopted the Strategy for Stockholm as a Smart and Connected City, which formed the framework of the City of Stockholm’s digitalisation ambitions and, among other things, gave the City’s Executive Office responsibility for establishing technical conditions and processes for IoT and shared data.

Connected SRS was initiated with the aim of continuing to explore how IoT and increased data sharing could be used as a tool in sustainability work, this time based on the City’s strategy.

Purpose and goal

The purpose of Connected SRS was to explore and enable the use of IoT in sustainability work in Stockholm Royal Seaport. This is based on the Strategy for Stockholm as a Smart and Connected City and with a specific focus on understanding how departments and companies can use the City of Stockholm’s central IoT platform, (when this is in place).

Results and experiences

The project contributed to its goal by demonstrating the technical potential of IoT and central platforms, encouraging the use of IoT in different areas, identifying challenges that need to be addressed in a more city-wide context, and contributing to the establishment of forums for dialogue between City of Stockholm departments and companies.

The project has also contributed to the following:

  • Development of a largely new IoT platform solution based on the Fiware standard.
  • Practical experience of connection, installation and operation of sensors in the City of Stockholm.
  • Identification and description of the development needs of City departments and companies linked to the management of streaming data.
  • The establishment of forms of collaboration for addressing central IoT issues in the City’s departments and companies.
  • Insights and maturity in the city around the implementation of development and pilot projects.
  • Formulation of generic knowledge linked to the introduction of IoT solutions in public activities.

Learnings and insights from Connected SRS will be taken further within City of Stockholm forums and working groups that have been established within the framework of IoT Stockholm and through existing national forums and networks in which project parties are active, for example, Smart City Lab.

Final seminar

The final seminar for Connected Stockholm Royal Seaport was held in February 2022. It focused on results and lessons that are generally applicable and can be useful in the development of IoT in Swedish cities and municipalities. The seminar was attended by the City of Stockholm's city Executive Office and Development Administration, IoT Sweden, Rise, Metry, and Sensative.
