Environment and working environment
Stockholm Royal Seaport is expanding with an increasing number of residents and businesses, alongside construction and development. There is a zero-incident vision for the construction work environment, and the project collaborates preventatively with all building operations to achieve a safe and secure construction site.
This applies particularly when new areas, businesses, and premises open and focuses on pedestrians and cyclists moving near the construction site. Risks are mapped and identified in the planning stage where there is a significant focus on construction consolidation as well as building and construction works. At the same time, environmental incidents are also to be minimised.
To further strengthen occupational health and safety work, specific start-up meetings are held with all contractors involved in the project. All professional staff undergo online training to gain access to the construction site. The project also actively cooperates with the police and fire services to prevent and ensure alarm and emergency response work. An example of this is that the project establishes its own alarm routine and action plans, which are provided to SOS Alarm to facilitate for SOS operators and optimise response time.
To facilitate the reporting of various incidents such as observations, near misses, and accidents, a digital reporting tool is used. Reported working environment incidents are listed in Table 6.1. The high number of reports is due to the developers proficiency in reporting.
Table 6.1 Summary of the number of incidents, near misses, and accidents
There is a high ambition and an open attitude from all developers to report incidents. This increases the possibility of working with preventive measures at early stages. Since construction began, Stockholm Royal Seaport has had fewer workplace accidents leading to sick leave compared to the construction industry. Despite the systematic and preventive work, a fatal accident occurred in 2018.
Stockholm Royal Seaport also works systematically to prevent and minimise the number of environmental incidents at construction sites, see Table 6.2. The occurred environmental incidents mostly involved unintended discharges of fuel or hydraulic oil. Troubleshooting by the supplier is ongoing.
